சூலியா

சூலியா என்ற சொல் தென்னிந்தியாவின் சோழமண்டலக் கடற்கரையிலிருந்து சிங்கப்பூருக்குக் குடியேறிய தமிழ் முஸ்லிம்களைக் குறிக்கிறது. அவர்கள் 1820-களில் வரத் தொடங்கினர். 'சூலியா' என்பது 'சோழ' என்ற சொல்லின் சிதைவு என்று கூறப்படுகிறது. இந்தியர்கள், தமிழ் முஸ்லிம்கள் இருவரையும் குறிக்கப் பயன்படுத்தப்பட்ட ‘கிளிங்’ என்ற சொல் கலிங்கத் தொடர்பிலிருந்து தோன்றியிருக்கலாம். இச்சொற்களின் தோற்றம் குறித்த தெளிவான தகவல்கள் இல்லை.

ஸ்டாம்ஃபோர்ட் ராஃபிள்ஸால் உருவாக்கப்பட்ட 1822-ஆம் ஆண்டின் நகரத் திட்டம், இன, சமய அடையாளங்களின்படி குடியிருப்புப் பகுதிகளைப் பிரித்திருந்தது. சுமார் 1000 தமிழ் முஸ்லிம்களின் சமூகத்திற்காகச் சிங்கப்பூர் ஆற்றின் கொள்மடைப் பகுதியில் "சூலியா கம்போங்" குறிக்கப்பட்டது (வரைபடத்தில் சிவப்பு வட்டமிட்டப் பகுதியைப் பார்க்கவும்). இன்றைய சிங்கப்பூரில், சைனாடவுனில் கிராஸ் ஸ்ட்ரீட் இருக்கும் இடத்தில் சூலியா கம்போங் இருந்ததாக நம்பப்படுகிறது. சூலியாக்களின் சிறுபடகுச் சேவைகளின் தேவையை முன்னிட்டே அவர்கள் பரபரப்பான துறைமுகப் பகுதியில் தங்கவைக்கப்பட்டதாகக் குறிப்புகள் உள்ளன.

'கிளிங்' என்ற சொல் காலப்போக்கில் இழிசொல்லாக மாறியபிறகு அதைப் பயன்படுத்துவதற்கு 1922-இல் சிங்கப்பூர் இந்தியர் சங்கம் எதிர்ப்பு தெரிவித்ததையடுத்து, கிளிங் ஸ்ட்ரீட் மறுபெயரிடப்பட்டு சூலியா ஸ்ட்ரீட் உருவாக்கப்பட்டது. தேசிய நினைவுச்சின்னங்களாக அரசிதழில் இடம்பெற்றுள்ள ஜாமிஆ சூலியா பள்ளிவாசல், அல்-அப்ரார் மசூதி, நாகூர் தர்கா போன்றவை சிங்கப்பூரின் பண்பாட்டு, சமயத் தளங்களில் சூலியாக்களின் பங்களிப்புகளுக்குச் சான்றாக நிற்கும் கட்டடக்கலை அடையாளங்கள்.
