Facts about Bukit Batok Public Library
Our History
Our library was officially opened on 21 November 1998 by then Deputy Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong. We are situated within the popular West Mall shopping centre. It was known as Bukit Batok Community Library until 2008, when it was renamed Bukit Batok Public Library. In 2011, we underwent a renovation.
Interesting Facts
In 1998, we were the first library in the world to use the Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) system, which allowed books to be processed immediately as they were returned through automated Bookdrops so that the loan records of the borrowers were updated instantly.
RFID technology was rolled out to all libraries after its successful pilot at our library and this cut down the time taken to update patron records by 30 minutes.
Our library was designed to resemble an ordinary retail shopfront for better integration in the mall.
