Young women were thoughtlessly match-made to demanding men (and their mothers) who at the slightest dissatisfaction with their new wives' dowries, domestic (or sexual) performances, will proceed to get rid of them, usually by burning. The men get away with their crimes due to the bias of the male-dominated legal system.
