MakeIT at Libraries
MakeIT at Libraries is an NLB initiative that lets everyone learn about and try new technologies that can bring your ideas to life.
Use 3D printing, digital cutting, robotics and other forms of tech-based fabrication to make computer-accurate and complex items that may not be possible by hand.

MakeIT At Libraries

We provide complete facilities and guidance for anyone to come and try their hand at new tech-based fabrication technologies, such as 3D printers, digital cutters, robotics and more. We offer a range of easy-to-understand Starter workshops where no expertise or experience is required.

All workshops and materials are available for free, for NLB members. Members are welcome to use our space and equipment to work on their personal projects and ideas.

For safety, equipment and programmes are recommended for ages 15 and above.

Signature Learning Areas

Learn about these ways of using technology to create and fabricate!

  • 3D Printing
Learn to create and edit 3-dimensional virtual designs, and  ‘print’ them out into actual physical items by using 3D printing machines.
  • Robotics & Coding
Use robotic kits and microcontrollers to create commands for a smart robot. No coding experience needed.
  • Digital Cutting
Create complex shapes with high accuracy using digital cutter machines to cut paper, wood, and other sheet materials with computerised precision.
  • Sewing
Use electric sewing machines beyond basic fabric work, and integrate technology for digital wearables with LEDs, sensors and more.
  • Upcycling
Learn about materials, DIY tips and prototyping, to ‘hack’ existing items for new purposes. Innovate by using things around us as materials for your own creations, repairs and home-hacks.

Our Programmes

At MakeIT at Libraries, you can learn about how to use Digital Making technologies, even if you have no prior experience. Whether you prefer to attend our Starter Sessions, DIY during our tinkering hours, or arrange a learning journey with us, we have something that suits the way you want to learn.

Our beginner friendly sessions are available for our signature areas of Digital Making. The classes are designed for easy understanding, and no experience is needed.

Sign up for our Starter Sessions here.

Our makerspaces are open for members to use the provided equipment and work on their own projects.  Signature fabrication equipment* and supporting tools are available to the public for use, for no fees.

Contact us or speak to any of our Centre Managers to find out more.

*Certain machines require the relevant MakeIT certification to access.

Organisations and groups of 5 or more are welcome to arrange learning journey sessions with us.  Learn about how the tech we feature is changing the world, and experience working with it first-hand at the session.

Arrange for a Learning Journey here.

If you prefer a more self-guided experience with digital fabrication technology, check out our alternative – by using our self-service booking service!

Seize the opportunity to explore and learn our MakeIT tech at your own pace, where you can enjoy usage of an array of self-service equipment such as 3D Printers, 3D Pens, and sewing machines during dedicated time slots.
