NLB’s new online platform for everyone to share their memories of life in Singapore
If you have an item from a moment in time in Singapore, such as a recent of old photograph captured at a memorable event, you can soon share this on the National Library Board's (NLB) new online crowdsourcing platform, “Singapore Memories: Documenting Our Stories Together”. From 1 October 2023, everyone can share their stories about Singapore via formats such as images, documents, video and audio clips, and even social media accounts. The platform is an effort by NLB to enrich Singapore’s collective documentary and published heritage by roping in the wider community to contribute, and to inspire generations of Singapore Storytellers.
The Singapore Memories portal is an expansion of the Singapore Memory Project which gathered text, images, videos and audio files of precious moments and memories of life; and the National Archives of Singapore’s (NAS) Citizen Archivist project, where members of public contributed by helping to describe photographs, and transcribe and translate oral history recordings and handwritten text in Straits Settlement records into typed text.
Through the new platform, NLB will also be making its first call for materials under the themes of local food heritage and youth culture. This supports NLB’s new Contemporary Collecting initiative which emphasises the importance of gathering memories of life in Singapore as we are living it. This is especially as our lives are becoming increasingly digital. Such a contemporary collecting effort will enable memories to be quickly captured, and enrich our shared experience. Everyone is invited to submit stories about Singapore in digital formats such as images, social media accounts, and soundscapes. Through this online platform, the public can also make our collections more accessible by helping with transcribing, translating and transliterating heritage materials. It can be accessed via: www.singaporememories.gov.sg.
The launch of the platform was announced by Minister for Communications and Information Mrs Josephine Teo at NLB’s Donors’ Appreciation Night held today, where donors were recognised for their contributions to its collections. More than 5,700 historical items, with some dating back to the 19th century, were donated by 85 donors to the National Library (NL) and NAS between April 2022 and March 2023.
Donated materials include images of Singapore as recorded in pre-World War II and World War II Japanese publications; 170 slides that capture life in Singapore from the 1960s; rushes of Singapore’s first expedition to Mount Everest in 1998 which chronicled the joys and perils of scaling the world's highest peak; and radio plays on Chinese classics, opera performances, storytelling and children’s programmes broadcast between 1980s and 1990s over Rediffusion, Singapore’s first cable-transmitted, commercial radio station.
These materials enhance our insights into Singapore’s past and contribute to NLB’s LAB25 (Libraries and Archives Blueprint 2025) Singapore Storyteller role, which aims to nurture a stronger appreciation and understanding of Singapore’s culture and heritage.
NLB’s Chief Executive Officer, Mr Ng Cher Pong, added: “We would like to thank our donors for their invaluable contributions to NLB’s collections, which will go a long way in further deepening appreciation for Singapore’s rich heritage. The new online crowdsourcing platform is part of our ongoing efforts to expand on ways, including through the use of AI, to enable everyone to contribute, access, and importantly, share Singapore Stories with one another.”
Complementing these initiatives is the Singapore Online Arts Repository (SOAR), an ongoing collaboration between the National Arts Council (NAC) and NLB. The repository seeks to enhance the national collection of Singapore arts content, and to make the materials digitally available for future generations. A diverse range of materials from Cultural Medallion recipients and arts groups has been collected and a selection will be progressively added to SOAR. Apart from SOAR, the public can also access more information about Singapore’s Cultural Medallion recipients at a dedicated showcase at The Arts House, and via NLB’s specially curated online resource guides.
Patrons may access NL and NAS’s collections via the following online platforms:

170 slides (35mm) captured by Mr Theo A. Strijker, documenting everyday life, places and celebrations in Singapore in the 1960s. |
The images provide a vivid documentation that reflect aspects of local life and culture that were of popular interest and curiosity among expatriates in Singapore at the time. The images are well-taken, hold historical significance and value for research as they capture in detail the places and ways of life that no longer exist today. They also hold social significance as the older generations of Singaporeans still identify with these sights captured which may evoke a sense of nostalgia about the past.
