  • Refresh your book collection and do your part to protect the environment

Singapore, 1 April 2011 – Book lovers can do their part for the environment while indulging in their love of reading with the upcoming Book Exchange 2011. Held for the third successive year, this event organised by Public Libraries Singapore allows book lovers to exchange their used books with each other. Apart from being an economical way to update one's book collection, the Book Exchange helps save the environment by minimising wastage. More than 6,500 participants are expected to take part in this year's edition with a projected exchange of about 65,000 books.

To participate in the Book Exchange, the public can drop off their used books at any public library from 2 to 15 April 2011, 11.00am to 8.00pm. A coupon will be given for every book accepted. All adults' and children's fiction and non-fiction books in the four official languages are accepted.

On 16 April 2011, the public can present their coupons at the Book Exchange event for a one-for-one exchange of books collected from other participants at The Plaza, National Library Building, from 8.30am to 6.00pm.

In line with the Book Exchange's green focus, participants are encouraged to bring their own carrier bags on 16 April 2011 as no bags will be provided at the event.

Ms Ngian Lek Choh, Acting Chief Executive of the National Library Board (NLB), said, “We hope that the public will continue to support Book Exchange as it provides a good opportunity for book lovers to share and discover their common love for reading with each other and in the process, help build a learning and reading culture in Singapore.”

The Book Exchange 2011 is held in conjunction with World Book and Copyright Day which aims to celebrate books and the joy of reading. In addition to the Book Exchange, programmes in the four official languages will be organised by Public Libraries Singapore in conjunction with World Book and Copyright Day.
