National Library Chinese Seminar –
The Chinese Community: From Early Days to the Digital Age
The Chinese community has made many contributions, in both big and small ways, to the development of Singapore since the 19th century. Join us for this seminar, where three distinguished guests will share about the Chinese community and their interconnectedness from multiple perspectives.
Dr. Hue Guan Thye
Senior Research Fellow, Chinese Studies, National University of Singapore
Dr. Hue will examine how the more obscure personalities in the Chinese community were instrumental in building a massive network by undertaking intermediary roles.
Mr. Kua Bak Lim
Mr. Kua will share his findings on Tan Boon Liat, a pioneer in the Chinese community and great-grandson of prominent Singapore merchant Tan Tock Seng.
Ms. Lee Huay Leng
Head of Chinese Media Group with Singapore Press Holdings
Ms. Lee will trace the evolution of the Chinese press’ reporting of the Chinese community over the decades as well as the challenges and opportunities it encountered.
