Yong Chuan started part-time studies at the Singapore University of Social Sciences School of Law in January this year. What drove him to go back to school at age 50? How does it feel having classmates who are as old as his 21-year-old son? How does he balance work, family and part-time studies? In his talk, he will share his personal journey of making a mid-career switch in 2011 and the ups and downs of going back to school this year when he should be planning for retirement.

Toh Yong Chuan, Executive sub-editor, The Straits Times

Toh Yong Chuan joined The Straits Times in 2011 as a senior correspondent after spending 18 years in the civil service. Between 2011 and 2018, he covered the manpower beat for the newspaper and has written stories on his experience working as a taxi driver, an Uber driver, a security guard and an eldercare worker. He was the SPH Journalist of the Year for 2014, and he also won two other awards that year: Feature of the Year and Story of the Year with Carolyn Khew on the scoop on a former tour guide from China who was convicted of siphoning millions of dollars from a wealthy but childless Singaporean widow. He is now an executive sub-editor in the newspaper.
