About the Programme
A callback to the early internet of the 90s and 00s, the handmade web is a sprawling landscape of diverse personal and community-based websites that exist outside of mainstream social media. As a space that centers creativity, self-expression and organic exploration in how we interface with the internet, the handmade web is an invitation to re-evaluate and find new ways of engaging with the World Wide Web. Whether you have never heard of the handmade web before, or are an already-active participant in this community, join us in this beginner-friendly, hands-on workshop to experiment with a different internet for ourselves.
In this hands-on workshop, you will:
Learn what the handmade web is and what motivates it today.
Learn some basic Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) to start writing your own web pages.
Create a web page for yourself.

About the Instructors
Amalina Lai
Amalina is a physicist by day and a self-proclaimed artist by night. Having spent much of her adolescence stumbling upon various quirky personal websites and staying up late to personalize her own blog, she dreams of reuniting with the same sort of wonderment she had as a pre-teen surfing the web before social media. These days, she maintains her own corner of the internet, sharing parts of her life and creative endeavours through woven snippets of HTML code. She hopes to share the joy of crafting a home for oneself in the landscape of today's internet.
Trevor Ching
Trevor is a physics PhD student in his final year of study, specializing in computational material physics. He grew interested in the idea of the handmade web after becoming disillusioned with social media and the exploitation and brokering of personal data, finding solace and nostalgia in personal crafted sites and blogs on are.na that reminded him of a simpler internet in his childhood. Some of his hobbies include listening to heavy metal, reading about the history and philosophy of theology and mythology, and watching horror movies.
