The following story was extracted from the book "i remember to my Grandpa/Grandma from juniors". With Affection.Contributed by: Azalea Syazwany Bte Mohamad Khair, 8, Greenridge Primary School.Dear grandfather, I am your granddaughter, and I am here to talk about you. You were born in 1930 so that makes you 78 years old. You like to eat porridge. I think it is good for you because you do not have many teeth left to chew on hard food. You were a retired policeman. My mother said that you were a fierce man when you were younger. That was for good cause though to discipline your eight children. Many years ago, when my mother was at my age and reads the Quran wrongly, she said you had whipped her with a cane. Everyday if you have nothing to do, you will watch Suria or Malaysian television channel. You shout very loudly when you get bored. Sometimes, you shout so loud I can hear you when I am waiting for my school bus downstairs. You are a schizophrenic patient for many years. My mother said that the doctor confirmed that it was a chemical imbalance in your brain that causes you to be schizophrenic. The good thing is you like and always remember to take your medicines which you take every morning and evening daily. The medicine helps calm you down. Every day, you wear a songkok, a sarong, your shirt and your big spectacles. After your meal, you will always ask for your pills because you want to get better. Sometimes, when you speak, your saliva drops down to the floor. I thought that was funny. You are very helpful. When my sister, my brother and I played the small bicycles, you will always bring it back to its place. My mother said you used to be a neat man before you fell ill. You have grey hair, grey moustache and dark skin. Sometimes, you give my parents money for fun but most of the times you will ask my mother to return the money. You always forget what day it is. Every day you will ask my mother to confirm the day. You also forgets when National Day is. You have a 4 acres plantation in Pontian, Johor in Malaysia. My mother said you had inherited it from your father who was my great grandfather. There were durian trees, mangosteen trees and tapioca leaves in your plantation. A few weeks ago, your sons and their families and your daughter, who is my mother and the family went to visit your plantation to pick the fruits and leaves. We could not bring you along because you would not want to travel far and long hours. We picked many durians, mangosteens and plucked lots of tapioca leaves. We ate some durians in a small hut in the plantation which was so delicious. Some were small, and some were big. When I went home, I continued eating the durians and they were yummy! My mother cooked for you durian dessert so you could taste the fruit from your own plantation. Grandfather, you sometimes choke on your food even though my mother and our domestic helper make sure they are cut into small pieces. When you drink, you will always spill water on your shirt. It must be your lack of teeth that made you that way. It is so pitiful. Whatever it is grandfather, we will always take good care of you.
