I have fond memories of my Art Classes with Mrs Mathieu in Katong Convent. I especially liked “Still Life”. We would be seated around the room facing a plate of fruit or some props. She taught us about background and foreground and the play of lights. She urged us to observe proportions, dimensions, textures etc. She demonstrated to us how to create depth and light. She was, herself, I suspect, an accomplished but modest artist. Making such artistic concepts (of colour, light, proportion…) work as one tries one’s best to commit the paint brush to paper was far from easy. And so despite the best of my efforts, my banana ended up looking like a mini yellow submarine at best or a small dirty bolster at worst. Good naturedly, we walked around assessing each other’s masterpieces and consoling each other’s valiant attempts. It was interesting that we learnt to see things from different perspectives; even it was the same plate of fruit placed before each of us in that room. “Memories collected from the School Reunion Contest held from 15 July to 9 Aug 2012 in collaboration with SPH and sponsored by Singapore Flyer.”
