The following memory is part of a collection from the Ministry of Education (MOE) on various schools’ submissions regarding the National Education (NE) core events (i.e. Total Defence Day/International Friendship Day/Racial Harmony Day/National Day) as part of the ‘iremembermySchoolDays’ campaign. Contributed by Mr Mohd Ali Mirza, Teacher-In-Charge of Racial Harmony Day, Marsiling Primary School. Racial Harmony Day was celebrated in our unique Marsilian style. We had pre-activity events followed by the actual celebration, which was a concert performance. As a round-up, we had the post-activity events. During the pre-activity event, we shared with our pupils about Vanishing Food in Singapore. This is conveniently tied to our Food Tasting activity where pupils experience the rich taste of Singapore food coming from the various communities. We also prepared our pupils to sing in Hindi, Hokkien and Boyanese. Through this, we hoped that our pupils learn to embrace one another’s culture and enjoy its rich traditions. The pupils particularly enjoyed the impromptu performance by our teachers in singing the songs. The pupils also had a chance to participate in the actual celebration as the songs were part of a sing-a-long item. Based on the warm response, it can be said that the pupils thoroughly enjoyed the session! The message of the importance of maintaining harmony is subtly infused to our pupils through a skit performance. It was the main highlight for the actual celebration. The pupils really enjoyed the performance evident in their bright and cheerful faces. During the celebration, our pupils were also treated to a band performance from our visitors from Taiwan. Our pupils graciously responded by giving a thunderous applause to the sterling performance. Not forgetting our needy, an initiative to collect money through the sale of bookmarks was also organised. The collection was then presented to Man Fut Tong Association. Title devised by Library staff.
