Information About

Memory contributed by Kamisah Bte Atan, 55, Housewife. Kamisah started community gardening in 2004 with a group of residents in Jurong East estate. The group started with 4 members and it grew to 30 active members till date. She explained that soil quality is the top challenge when the garden just started as she believed that soil quality will affect the plant quality. Major changes started in 2005 when CIB team approached her and started to offer her guidance on garden improvement. She still remember the garden's first participation in CIB Awards and her involvement in Singapore Garden Festival in 2008 and that great sense of satisfaction in able to outreach and share with members of public the joy of community gardening. And on the same year she received the Best Show Garden Award by SWCDC. She acknowledges that every member plays an important role in the garden from weeding the garden to surveillance of the garden from their home. “Community gardening is about people sharing the same passion for plants and the kampong spirit” said Kamisah. Kamisah further explain that “community garden is a harmony of people coming together with different opinions and their voices make it so lively”, she often have to mediate the situation but she is enjoying it nonetheless. She remember the little joy of gardening as greatest satisfaction like children getting involved and learn about importance of nature. Interview was done by Maxel from the Community in Bloom (CIB) program of the National Parks Board (NParks). Launched in 2005 by NParks, the CIB program aims to foster a gardening culture among the people in Singapore.
