Information About

My father was born in Singapore 24th March 1970 .He lived at Peck Seah Street, in a shophouse, with his 3 elder sisters and parents. He described his neighbourhood to be a friendly one, with people from all walks of life. Living near the port, he said it was a busy area. He also recalled many samsui women ( labourers) worked there. Catching " longkang" fish, playing games on the streets and watching street entertainment were good times, he said. When the uncle selling curry puffs came with his full basket, my dad said he would pay for 4 curry puffs and pass down 3 more to his sister waiting behind secretly.Guess stealing was a norm back then! He said that the community was small, so everyone was well - known to one another.Doors were left unlocked, so they could play anytime, anywhere. Neighbours were his source of company. He also mentioned that in his house, getting hit by pipes and canes in public were normal. How strict , unlike now !
