Information About

I am Ruth Tan Tiag Ying from class 102, Nanyang Girls' High School. During the June holidays, I was assigned to research about my family history and I will now share with you my research findings. My family origin is in Guangdong, Chaozhou, Chaoan, China. The meaning of my English name is filial and understanding. My Chinese name is 陈哲颖 and 陈 is my surname, 哲 means wise and 颖 means clever. My paternal grandfather is from Guangdong, Chaoan. He was a farmer at that time and did not receive any education. He married my paternal grandmother at the age of 20 and it was an arranged marriage. My paternal grandmother gave birth to my eldest uncle in 1948, in China. At the age of 25, he came to Singapore to search for a better life. He made paper flowers for ancestral worship. My paternal grandmother then gave birth to 7 other children in Singapore. My uncles were born in 1956, 1959, 1960. My aunts were born in 1957, 1958, 1962. My father was the youngest in his family and he was born in 1968. My eldest uncle studied in Yusof Ishak Secondary School and the rest, including my father, studied at Chung Cheng High School (Main). The whole family had to help out my paternal grandfather to make paper flowers for ancestral worship, and my father did this until he was about 18 years old. My father went to National University of Singapore on a scholarship and he majored in Mathematics. There, he met my mother, who was also majoring in Mathematics at that time. Both my mother and father are now working as Mathematics teachers in secondary and JC schools. My father married my mother in 1995. My maternal grandfather was born in Singapore in 1948. He studied at Toong Chai English School, which is not in existence now. He worked at Bridgestone Tires. My maternal grandmother was born in Singapore in 1948 as well. She studied at Raffles Girls' Primary School and thereafter studied at Raffles Girls' School. Pre-university was Adult Education Board and she went to work in the morning. She started to work in 1967. My grandmother's primary school classmate used to write to my grandfather and somehow they got to know each other. She gave birth to my aunt in 1971 and adopted my uncle in 1969. My mother studied at Raffles Girls' Primary School and thereafter proceeded to study at CHIJ St Nicholas Girls' School. She studied at National Junior College and went to study at National University of Singapore on a scholarship, majoring in Mathematics. She gave birth to my brother in 1997 and to me in 2002.
