When I was little, we sometimes went to eat at a place we called "Under the Bridge" - strictly speaking under the Whitley Road Flyover. Where there is a bus park now, there used to a collection of stalls that would appear in the evening. We were oblivious to the dust that must have been shaken down from the flyover's structure by the passing cars. I remember the tauhu goreng fondly. I especially enjoyed the "choot choot" shellfish cooked in sambal; in fact that's when and where I learnt the sucking action to get the shellfish meat out. It's also where I started to appreciate teh halia (also called teh sarabat), which was otherwise difficult to find in the Thomson area in the 70's - we'd have to go to Farrer Park Hawker Centre to drink it - and to this day it's one of my favourite beverages. I seem to remember that the Whitley Road hawker stalls moved around the same time as the Farrer Park Hawker Centre started closing - hey, do you know that the "No Signboard" Chilli Crab started there? - and several stalls from both places ended up in Adam Road. It's my theory that's why Adam Road has so many Muslim stalls for a hawker centre of such small size. Seriously, 2 nasi lemak stalls and 3 teh halia stalls? But I don't mind, since I can get my teh halia fix easily.
