Mr Lim Kong Yeow fondly remembers his fun childhood. His after school activities with friends included going to da shui gou (big canal), catching fish and swimming in the flood. He also used to play with balloons and lanterns at the back of his house, cook and steal potatoes to eat. Sometimes he found money dropped by shophouses at shui gou. There was once he found a World War II gun in the small river. His parents used to be hard and they studied by themselves. Teachers were also allowed to beat students back then. Mr Lim also used to eat mian xian and two eggs. It was believed that they brought good fortune and red hard boiled eggs represented good luck. He also used to peek into people's houses to watch TV with friends.
