Information About

Mdm Wong was listening to an old looking radio transmitter when I approached her to find out more about her own story. Unsurprisingly, Mdm Wong shared with me a story of the one prop she had with her that afternoon - the radio. Mdm Wong was born into a family of seven, of which her ancestors were Hainanese speaking. Her parents were street hawkers, and the burden of supporting 5 children meant that there were not much entertainment options to begin with. The girls in the Kampong would be playing with rubber bands and the boys would play with Goli. But what was life changing was the appearance of Radio. Throngs of people will gather together and listen through the day. It was quite simply a phenomenon back then. The most popular was that of Rediffusion where stories were told of dialects and Mdm Wong and her siblings exposed to Western Music. Till today, radio is very much a part of Mdm Wong’s life. She still listens to 95.8 FM for her daily dose of news in dialects. This time round though, in her comfort of her own home and the absence of company of her siblings and neighbours.
