Information About

My grandmother was only 8 at the time, she is 79 and soon to be 80 on the 19 of April 2015. She and her parents lived at Deppo Road during world war 2 as her father worked as a machine operator at the shipyard near their house which was a hostel from her dad’s company. During the war her mother had died and she had to take care of her sisters and thus could not go to school. They had little food everyday and the hygiene in their one-room flat was poor, she also had very little things at the time and even had little or none of some basic necessities like clothes. Often there was gunfire that was heard at night and there were sirens that wailed loudly warning the people of an incoming airstrike. “My dad had a shelter under a flight of stairs leading to their basement and he would always ask us to hide in there when the Japanese invaded our house.” They could not go out at night and even if they were safe to go out in the afternoon it would only be for buying food which she had to do often. Her second brother worked for the People’s Association Party (PAP) and his job was to persuade people to vote for them. After World War 2 she had found a job at Bukit Timah as a seamstress. She said that her worst memory of the war was when Japanese had invaded her house and captured her father which was then released a few days later.
