I remember the make-shift fish-ball stall @ Sim Lim Wet Market that my grandmother would leave me at while she went about her daily wet-marketing. She would order a bowl of fish-ball kway teow soup for me and asked me to take my time to finish it, while she went away for half an hour. The hawkers were very helpful then. They, not only sold fish-ball soup, they helped in looking out for others too. I missed a little of that kind of spirit now in modern Singapore.
