Information About

Being a prefect in Katong Convent was not an enviable task. We often made ‘enemies’ when we carried out our duties. We carried a little book where we noted down the misdeeds of our not-so-law-abiding peers. We reported and consolidated the names of these miscreants and sometimes, the usual suspects have to be ‘summoned’ for detention classes. Such classes meant that these students sit through a counselling session and reflect on their actions. These students were forced to be in a certain classroom for a number of hours. Though detention time was supposed to be a time for students to revise their schoolwork, offenders often ended up chatting amicably with the prefects. Killing time was much more pleasant when you could engage in some recreational banter, even if that meant speaking with one’s ‘enemy’! There were times when real connections were made. The offender and the prefect would end up bidding fond farewell to each other, like a pair of good friends! Sometimes, one would hear a prefect saying to an offender: ”O so and so, it was great chatting with you. But make sure I don’t have any chance of seeing your face in this room again!” “Memories collected from the School Reunion Contest held from 15 July to 9 Aug 2012 in collaboration with SPH and sponsored by Singapore Flyer.”
