Katong Convent has, to some extent, groomed girls into articulate, artistic and active individuals. But there were those who didn’t quite care… The walls of the old school in Martia Road were adorned with reproductions of Renaissance masters - Renoir, Rembrandt, Degas….I remembered spending hours gazing at them. And there were the days of Book and Music Weeks, the full-scale Shakespearean drama productions in Victoria Theatre. How many of us could boast that in their secondary school days, they had a chance to hear a world-class opera singer, in their school hall, no less? Counter-tenor Mr Tay Cheng Jim delivered his fine vocal talents to Katong Convent. Though I could not understand French, I was struck by how joyful and melodious the whole experience was. I remembered closing my eyes to enjoy the song and someone had to spoil it all by insisting that I stopped sleeping!
