I grew up at Tanglin Halt ""chap lau"" otherwise known as ten storey block of Tanglin Halt. My nanny's husband used to be a soldier for the British. Back then, they were given quarters at Queen Close. They were then relocated to Tanglin Halt. After retiring, they were given a small plot of land which ran parallel along the railway tracks of former KTM. On this land, they grew tapioca, banana, chilli etc. We played at the hills which led us up to the colonial houses and also Alexandra Hospital.. now the KTM tracks have been removed. I could no longer count the carriages of each train that passed by. And no more orchard farm feeling.. but the memory will always etched in me like it was yesterday.
