I would like to share Story of Secret Society Gang fight in the late 50s! When I was about 5 or 6 years old, I stayed at 58 Sambawa Road between Jalan Sultan Road around Beach Road. My grandfather managed a Goldsmith Shop and my neighbour ran Provision shop. Around the corner of our shop there was a Bakery factory. Suddenly one Saturday early afternoon, I saw a handful of ‘Handsome’ young men dressed like Yuppy in white trouser, shorts, Red color shirts, Bright Hawaii shirts for some, all gethered in the Bakery factory. Eventually, I Iearnt of the Secret society dog fight that will soon take place of 2 groups, namely “24” and “08”had an issue to resolve and there was tension along the street of a kind of ‘cewfew’ on Sunday. Surprising no one called the Police! Alas, on Sunday night at about 9.00 pm suddenly I heard of shouts and the breaking sound of Beer Bottles and young men carrying “Parang” running and chasing the other gang members although I could not see the other gang members from my home window. This was how I witness of a Gang fight of 24 & 08 Gangs fight in the 50s on the streets of Singapore when I was young, that was what I witnessed a gang fight of ‘24’& ‘08’ Secret society. I did not see the outcome of the fight as to which gang was a strong team but did see that a youth was running towards my window view with his arm bleeding. The next day, understand that my neighbour's son was arrested and did not see him thereafter in the next few days and coming weeks. This was the scene in Sumbawa Road/Jalan Sultan Road/Beach Road area in the 50s, Thank God my family and I were on caught in the cross fire!
