“No pain, No Gain” It means if you do not work hard, you will not gain anything. I first started understanding this last year, it was my first time participating in the SYF competition for Chinese Orchestra, so I had no idea what to expect. “It’s too difficult,” I told my Yangqin instructor as I tried to sight-read my SYF song. My three friends agreed. “Gather around, let me teach you,” said my instructor as he taught us how to play the song. Days passed as we practised the song over and over, and before I knew it, it was the day before the big day. Although I practised a lot, I was still anxious. My mother consoled me and said,” Don’t be anxious, be confident.” I was still worried. As I tried to sleep that night, I wished I could sleep as soundly as my brother. “ Ring…ring…” rang the alarm clock. It was morning. The big day had arrived. I went through my morning routines, my father drove me to the school. There, I wore the Chinese Orchestra performance outfit and a bus brought us to SCH. At SCH, we waited and waited and then it was our turn. We went in and started playing our instruments. So far, so good! I thought. Then, I heard a wrong note played. Oh no! Let’s hope the judges did not hear it, I thought. After what seemed like eternity, the song ended. We were brought back to our school to continue our lessons. After two days, we were told the results. The result was Gold With Honours! I nearly cried tears of joy. After all the hard work, we got Gold With Honours. I cannot wait to get Gold With Honours for the next SYF. Sometimes, transferring to a new school is not so bad because you never know what is going to happen to you or how you are going to change into a good person and ace your Primary School Leaving Examinations. When I was told by my parents that I was going to transfer into Catholic High Primary School, I was a little reluctant to do so because I have been in Pei Chun Public School for three years and had lots of fond memories there. Plus, Catholic High is a school full of boys so I thought that the school would be flooded with vulgarities. During the first day of school, I held my mother’s hand tightly, fearing I would be lost in the multitude of people. We climbed up and down the stairs before finding my classroom. My Maths teacher, Mr Chua, was in the classroom with other kids at that time. I thought Mr Chua was very scary as his face looked very strict, but to my surprise ad relief, he was funny and kind. All of us could not resist but to laugh at his funny antics. Then, I met my Chinese teacher, Mrs Zhong Ya. She was kind and funny, just like Mr Chua. However, She can very fierce too. That is, when you do not hand in her homework on time. After that, I met my Form teacher, Mrs Karen Lee. She was fierce and strict, but otherwise caring and kind. She treated us all like her own children. Now, I play with my best friends, Koei Loo and Joel Chong. I am so lucky to have such good friends too. Whenever I am feeling down, Koei will try to cheer me up. Joel always bring things to school and share it with us. I feel so blessed to be in such a wonderful and caring environment. I will definitely do my best in my Primary School Leaving Examinations in order to get to the Secondary School. I hope I will be happy in Catholic High for many years to come!
