Information About

Music in Singapore is very much popularised and influence by Western and Chinese cultures. In the 1980s, Chinese music was met by the rise of Xinyao. However, English music in Singapore was seldom mentioned or talked about. For English educated Mr Rodney Lee, his memory of Singapore revolved largely around music. 60s was a time where many music talents were discovered through various singing competitions. Mr Rodney and his friends used to sneak into hotels to listen to live performances of local Singapore talents. His fondest memories were that of Matthew and the Mandarins, a local “cowboy band” that produced their own country music and performed at Shangri-La Hotel. Mr Rodney and his friends were fervent supporters of the band. He mentioned that Singapore does not produce talents like Matthew and the Mandarins or The Quests anymore. He still held copies of the music produced by the band.
