When we talk about school, what everyone always thought of were the heavy load of homework, assignments, projects and the CCAs which take up too much time. We were always reminded by only the unhappy things which happened to us that we forget about the happy events that had taken place. One of those happy things will be the annual National Day Celebration that takes place in school. The day of the celebration in my secondary school will always start off with a parade where all the Uniformed Groups and the school command band will gather as one. At first, the students will all be whispering and talking among themselves, but as soon as the parade commander's loud and clear voice rings out, all heads will turn towards him and all mouths will be shut in an instant. The audience will watch in interest and anticipation as the entire parade commence. The state flag will be brought in, and then everyone sings the National Anthem loudly. Then we will recite the pledge, and not to forget, we will also make responses to the recollections read out by the emcee. When the parade eventually ends off, everybody starts to clap and some will even comment that it was a great job done. Then, the teachers will lead their classes up to the school hall, where the performances start. The performances are usually a fancy drill by selected members of the uniformed groups, dances and not to forget, a well-prepared skit by the Drama Club which showcases the Singapore Spirit. Later, the school hall will fall into silence as the school choir starts to sing the theme song of that year's National Day. As soon as the song starts, many will also start to sing along, and that is the time where I will feel like crying, simply because I will be too overwhelmed with the emotions swirling in my heart. Afterwards, the emcees for the day comes out and presents some unique things about Singapore. A quiz will be given, and quite of number of students will raise the hands excitedly, wanting to answer the questions. After the quiz, several new Singaporean citizens will be up on stage, telling us their story of Singapore. The last highlight of the day will be the sing-along session, whereby everyone starts to sing along to their favourite National Day theme songs with bright smiles adorning their faces. How I wish I had a camera at that time, because I want to capture the moment when the students were displaying the 'Singaporean Spirit'. The celebration ends too fast, and students clad in red t-shirts tumble out of the school gates. With happy smiles, they proudly walk around on the Singaporean streets, showing off the Singaporean spirit. It is the day when we see all of the Singaporeans come together as one.
