I can trace my family tree to my grandparents who originated from Nan-An, Fujian province of China. They came to Singapore to work as coolies in the shipping industry. The living conditions were extremely poor back then. I still remembered eating soya mixed with rice as my daily meals in those days. During that time, we saw children rooming freely on the road together with those stray dogs, buses packed with no doors, taxi was a luxury. Big family stacked in one little house, and naturally family ties were closer then. The youth today are so much more fortunate than the old generations. Everyone today enjoys the most accessible public transport, world-class education system and cleanest environment. I hope our future generations would never forget about the hardship our forefathers had gone through and never take our progress for granted.
