Information About

Mr Wong recalls Chinatown being an area for coolies. They came from China to work in Singapore but most of them were sick and old, without any proper place to live in. Some died while the others continued living next to the dead body. Life was very difficult. All his dad's books were burnt during WWII. He also heard from his dad that locals got their head chopped off and hanged. Mr Wong thinks the spirits of the dead still linger around, so the temple was built. Last time there were many gangs and they used to gather and talk at the 'Wei Guan'. They used to chop off the heads of those who opposed them and hung those heads on the street lights. Outram Park used to have a prison and their hair will stand if they walk past the area because it's scary. Mr Wong also claim that the indian temple in that area was very dirty as the workers just eat, sleep and live there. Chinatown used to be separated into many districts for the different dialect groups. As long as one knows the dialect, they can enter.
