The name “Bukit Batok” has multiple possible origins, with interpretations ranging from batok as the Javanese term for “coconuts” to a phonetic transformation of the Malay word batu (stone), referencing the area’s granite quarries. Bukit Batok was developed from a hilly forested area into a vibrant residential town in the 1980s. The town centre, centred around the Bukit Batok Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) station, has evolved into a bustling hub with amenities such as West Mall. Residents find respite in the natural heritage of the Bukit Batok Town Park – known as Little Guilin for its resemblance to the famous Chinese landscape – which was built on a former quarry site. Located at the Bukit Batok Nature Park, the Bukit Batok War Memorial plaque serves to commemorate World War II history.
