On 27 July 1932, Great World Amusement Park hosted the grand opening of a night market. Great World was transformed into a night market featuring over 70 stalls offering goods produced both locally and abroad. The park was splendidly illuminated for the occasion, and a variety of performances added to the festivities including Chinese wayang (opera), Malay opera, and a Garoet (Java) bamboo musical party, which was rarely heard in Singapore. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Sources: “The Great World,” Straits Times, 21 July 1932, 12.; “Great World Notes,” Malaya Tribune, 22 July 1932, 7.; “Great World News: Pasar Malam Celebrations,” Malaya Tribune, 27 July 1932, 12.; “The Great World,” Straits Times, 27 July 1932, 12.
