Abstract
"This book is compiled to illustrate the present status of the problem of conservation of the diversity in plants in different parts of the world. While collecting material for the book, the authors used the list of rare and endangered plants of different regions and states in Europe, Australia, New Zealand, the USSR, the United States, and other countries and numerous publications on identification and study of individual taxa that need protection, as well as the International Red Data Book of Plants prepared by a special commission on endangered plant species under the International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN). According to this commission, about 20,000 species of higher plants, or about 10 per cent of the world's flora, need protection at present. Only 250 taxa are included in the Red Data Book of the IUCN." "The present book provides a brief description of about 2000 rare and endangered plants. The plants are described under different families in alphabetic order. A brief description of the family is presented only at its first mention. The rarity categories of the IUCN have been used for characterization of species: extinct or probably extinct, endangered, vulnerable (decreasing in population strength), and rare."--Jacket.
