Abstract
Videorecording of Robert Yeo's play, 'Changi' staged at Raffles Studio Theatre, National Institute of Education. Based on the third of the Singapore Trilogy, a collection of three related plays by Robert Yeo, which follows a group of characters from their student days in London. In this third play Changi, we see the imprisoned Reginald Fernandez being interrogated by the Internal Security Department under inhuman conditions, and finally, in order to gain release, forced to compromise his beliefs by confessing to trumped-up political wrongdoings on TV. After going into exile in London, he returns to attend his father's funeral and cannot resist the temptation to enter opposition politics once more. The play is set in Singapore in the early years of its independence and the lead character, Reginald Ferandez was loosely based on a political detainee, Michael Fernandez's life.
