Abstract
Stella Kon, who is descended from Dr Lim Boon Keng, wants to use music, song and drama to implant the legend of this iconic Singaporean into the country's imagination. These songs are from her musical One Voice, inspired by the life and times of Lim Boon Keng. In Crown Colony Anthem, complacent colonialists glorify the British Empire, in Run Run Run rickshaw coolies complain of their hard lot. Deadly Days deals with the epidemic of venereal disease, which was a political hot potato of the late nineteenth century. In Song in the Silence, an idealistic young doctor resolves to leave his personal comfort zone, for the thankless role of public service; and in Rain Song, (from another musical Red Lanterns) Dr Lim Boon Keng reflects that the spirit of these earlier pioneers, will echo forever in the streets of Singapore.
