Abstract
This is a video recording of an interview conducted with Singapore’s most celebrated Beijing opera doyenne, 94-year-old Phan Wait Hong, recipient of the Cultural Medallion Award for Theatre in 1992. In the video, Phan provides an anecdotal account of her early life in China, her training in opera singing under her first teacher, as well as her acting and teaching career in Singapore. The final part of the video, entitled "Golden Years", provides recordings of excerpts of the Chinese opera performances by Phan on the stage, as well as a live recording of her performance during the interview, singing one of her favourite Beijing opera songs. Narration conducted in Chinese with English subtitles.
