这部由斯坦因从敦煌藏经洞携回的王玠"金刚经"产生于公元868年,它是目前世界纪年最早的印刷书籍,现收藏于英国国家图书馆. 英国著名汉学家吴芳思和英国国家博物馆修复部主任马克ʺ伯纳德,在本书中向我们讲述了关于发现,转移和修复经过,更在中国发明造纸术,印刷术等 更广泛的背景下,为我们呈现了印刷这部"金刚经"的纸张,油墨乃至印刷工序等种种珍贵的历史资料.英国国家图书馆修复人员历时近40年(1972Ł®2010),终于使这部破烂不堪的"金刚经"印本恢复至近乎诞生时的模样. 本书以客观,冷静,真挚的笔触,并配与珍贵的插图,从人文,历史的广阔视角,涵盖中亚考古,佛教典籍,印刷工艺,文物修复等多领域知识,叙述了这部王玠"金刚经"印本重见天日的完整过程.
