Abstract
"In the year of the 40th anniversary of Singapore's separation from Malaysia, Singapore's The Necessary Stage and Malaysia's dramalab will come together to examine the relationship between the two countries over the past four decades. Playwrights Haresh Sharma and Jit Murad and Directors Alvin Tan and Zahim Albakri, incorporating historical fact and personal anecdote, will explore characters living under respective changing political, economic, social and cultural systems. The collaboration will produce a piece of theatre that explores intercultural dialogue between two countries that were once one entity. Examining themes of globalisation, migration and national and cultural identities in both historical and contemporary contexts, Separation Forty asks: What does it mean to be territorial?."
