Abstract
A global trend has seen political parties written into law as bodies subject to special regulations. Asia is no exception to this trend. In laws on parties in Taiwan and South Korea, a set of reasons why parties ought to be regulated can be identified. The historical forces behind these reasons include colonial laws and legacies, Cold War imperatives, and transitions to democracy. This presentation outlines key themes in party law in Northeast Asia and examines their relevance to Southeast Asia. The talk draws on the author's ongoing research on legal regulation of parties in East and Southeast Asia. This research aims to shed light on changing patterns of representation in the region.
