Abstract
Jamilah, a strong-willed singer in a travelling troupe, resists the idea of marriage. One night, Umar, a poor thief, enters her room intending to steal from her. Unable to escape in time when Jamilah returns with her colleague, Umar pretends to be Jamilah's estranged husband. Initially bewildered, Jamilah empathises with Umar's dire circumstances and an unconventional bond forms between the two. Penchuri was digitally restored in 2K by the Asian Film Archive in 2021, using a sole-surviving 16mm print.
