Information About

How much do you know about the Angsana (Pterocarpus indicus), one of the most iconic trees in Singapore? Well-known for its dense crown and attractive yellow blooms, the non-native Angsana was first introduced as a roadside tree by the British colonial administration in the late 19th century. Since then, its history in Singapore has been complicated but riveting. This talk explores how the Angsana fit into the initial ‘Garden City’ vision of the 1960s, the mysterious disease that killed off hundreds of these trees along our streets, and how this majestic tree has persevered in our cultural memory to this day.
