Facade of the three-storey Manasseh Meyer Building of University of Singapore in Bukit Timah, topped with a small tower in the centre, and two flatted domes at both ends. It houses the laboratories of Department of Chemistry between 1929 and 1966. It was constructed in the 1920s with contributions from Sir Manasseh Meyer, a Jewish merchant and philanthropist. Raffles College at Bukit Timah was declared open by Sir Hugh Clifford, Governor of the Straits Settlements, on 22 July 1929. In 1949, it merged with King Edward VII College of Medicine to form University of Malaya, precursor to University of Singapore (established in Jan 1962). In 1980, University of Singapore merged with Nanyang University to form "National University of Singapore" (NUS). Between 1982 and 2000, the Bukit Timah campus was occupied by National Institute of Education. Subsequently, it was occupied by Singapore Management University (2000-2005). The former Raffles College campus was gazetted as a national monument by Preservation of Monuments Board on 11 November 2009. In May 2005, the Government reallocated the Bukit Timah Campus to NUS.
