This is a half-length portrait of Mr. Lee Choon Guan, a businessman and banker. He was a prominent Straits Chinese millionaire; Municipal Commissioner for Central Ward (1900-1905); Unofficial Member of Legislative Council (1922-1924); President of Straits Chinese British Association (1917) and Straits Chinese Recreation Club; and Chairman of Chinese Commercial Bank Limited (1912-1924). His father, Mr. Lee Cheng Yan (李清渊), built the Mandalay Villa at 29, Amber Road in Tanjong Katong in 1902. Choon Guan's daughter, Madam Lee Poh Neo was married to Mr. Lim Chong Pang (林忠邦), the second son of Mr. Lim Nee Soon (林义顺), a Teochew rubber and pineapple merchant millionaire, in 1924.
