This is portrait of Sir Song Ong Siang, in army uniform and standing behind his wife, Madam Helen Yeo Hee Neo (b.1885-d.1951), the second daughter of Mr. Yeo Poon Seng, a Hokkien saw mill owner, and sister to Madam Nancy Yeo Yam Neo (wife of Mr. Tan Soo Bin (b.1882-d.1940), eldest son of Mr. Tan Jiak Kim (陈若锦, 1859-1917), a prominent Hokkien merchant). Sir Song Ong Siang (b.1871-d.1941), a prominent Chinese lawyer, was Assistant Editor of Straits Settlements Law Reports (1894-1899); Unofficial Member of Straits Settlements Legislative Council (1924-1927); and President of Straits Chinese British Association (1932-1933). He was awarded Guthrie Scholarship in 1883 and Queen's Scholarship in 1888. He was the third son of Mr. Song Hoot Kiam (b.1830-d.1900), founder of Straits Chinese Church (Prinsep Street Presbyterian Church). Title devised by Library staff.
