Information About

This is a view of the entrance to Tan Tock Seng Hospital at Moulmein Road. The foundation stone of the first hospital known as the Chinese Pauper Hospital (later Tan Tock Sing Hospital) at Pearl's Hill was laid on 25 July 1844. The second hospital with two wards for the lepers and for the women were built at the corner of Serangoon Road and Balestier Road by the Government of India in 1860, and three new wards were added in 1879 by Mr. Tan Beng Swee (陈明水), a prominent Hokkien merchant and head of the Kim Seng & Company, a trading house at Boat Quay, and at subsequent dates by the Straits Settlements Government. The third hospital on a small hill at Moulmein Road was completed in 1909. On 4 January 1957, three towering six-storey ward blocks were added at the Government expense.
