This is the façade of the old St. Joseph's Church (Church of São José) at Victoria Street. The foundation stone was laid by Reverend Father Vincente de Santa Catarina of the Portuguese Mission and Vicar of St. Joseph's Church, on 14 December 1851. It was completed and blessed in 1853. It was demolished in 1906. The foundation stone of the new church building was laid by Reverend Dom Azevedo e Castro, Bishop of Macau (1903-1918), on 21 August 1904. He also blessed the new church building on 30 June 1912. In July 1981, the church came under the jurisdiction of Archdiocese of Singapore after being under the guidance of Bishop of Macau since 1886. It ceased to be a parish church since 1999. The church was gazetted as a national monument on 14 January 2005. Title devised by Library staff.
