Information About

This picture depicts the façade of The River House, the oldest building in Clarke Quay. It was built in the 1880s for Tan Yeok Nee (1827-1902), a successful gambier and pepper trader. The double-storey mansion displays traditional southern Chinese architectural style with its ornamentations of Chinese mythical creatures. It later became the premises of a clan association and a warehouse. In 1995, the building won the inaugural Architecture Heritage Award for its good restoration practices. It now houses a restaurant under the IndoChine Group known as "The Forbidden City". Title devised by Library staff.
