He was the first Chairman of Union of Domiciled Malayans; Member of Singapore Municipal Commission (1939-1941); President of Anglo-Chinese School Old Boys' Association (1939-1940); Unofficial Member of Singapore Advisory Council (1946-1947); Vice-President of Singapore Chinese Chamber of Commerce (1948-1949); Elected Unofficial Member of Legislative Council representing Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Member of Executive Council (1948-1955); Deputy President of Singapore Legislative Council (1951-1955); Patron of YMCA (1977-2005); Managing Director (1942-1972), Chairman (1966-Sep 1983) and later Honorary Life President of Oversea-Chinese Banking Corporation; Director (1937), Deputy Chairman (1950-1954) and later Chairman of Overseas Assurance Corporation Limited (1970-1980); and Chairman of Malayan Breweries (1957-1983), Great Eastern Life Assurance Company Limited (1969-1992), Robinson and Company (1957-1976), The Straits Trading Company Limited (Jun 1965-1992), Singapore Turf Club (1982-1986) and Bukit Turf Club (1988). He married Miss Helene Wee (b.1907-d.1995), a daughter of Mr. Wee Theam Seng (d.1950), former Manager of Chinese Commercial Bank Limited (1918-1927).
