Information About

This picture shows pupils of Bukit Merah North School drinking milk while seated. The School Milk Scheme in Singapore was launched at 33 primary schools in 1974, with the objective of improving the nutritional intake of children, and to inculcate a healthy eating lifestyle and good nutrition habits in them. Under the Scheme, schoolchildren were able to buy a packet of 150ml flavoured milk for a nominal sum. The Scheme was discontinued in 1988, however, after findings linked the consumption of milk to a possible cause of obesity among schoolchildren. Title devised by Library staff.
