Miss Hedwig Elizabeth Aroozoo (right) with her eldest sister, Marie Ethel Aroozoo (left) in graduation robes. Both of them graduated from University of Malaya in 1951. Hedwig worked as a librarian at the University of Malaya Library in Singapore and Kuala Lumpur (1952-1962); and became Assistant Director (1962-1964) and later Director of National Library in Singapore (May 1965-Nov 1988); Honorary Secretary (1969-1980), Vice-Chairman (1980-1981) and later Chairman of National Book Development Council of Singapore (1981-1984); and founder member and President of Association of Women for Action and Research (1989-1991). She was awarded the Public Administration Medal (Gold) in 1969 for her contribution to library services. Her sister, Marie (later Mrs. Marie Anthony Bong), became an English teacher (1951) and later Principal of CHIJ Katong Convent (1972-1985). Their father, Mr. Percival Frank Aroozoo was the first Asian Principal of Gan Eng Seng School (1938-1955). Title devised by Library staff.
