This picture depicts the façade of St. Margaret's School at 134, Sophia Road, opposite Government House (Istana Negara). The girls' school was founded by Mrs. Maria Dyer, a British missionary with London Missionary Society, in a shophouse on North Bridge Road in 1842. It was then known as "Chinese Girls' School" (1861) and "Church of England Zenana Missionary Society School" (1900) before it was renamed "St. Margaret's School". The school was relocated to 134, Sophia Road in 1861. In 1960, the primary and secondary sections were separated. St. Margaret's Secondary School was relocated to Farrer Road on 5 January 1960. It was declared open by Right Reverend R.F. Gibson Junior, Bishop of Virginia, on 20 February 1963. The school was temporarily relocated to the former site of Tanglin Secondary School on Commonwealth Avenue between June 1998 and December 2000. The new premises at 111, Farrer Road was declared open by Dr. Tony Tan Keng Yam, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Defence, on 22 July 2002. It was granted autonomous status by Ministry of Education in 2009. Past principals of St. Margaret's Secondary School include Mrs. Martha Holloway (1957-1965); Mrs. Kon Tong Thye (1966-1967); Mrs. Liza Matthew George (Jul 1967-1990); Mrs. Tan Lee Lee (1991-1998); and Mrs. Caroline Lee-Ong Chon Peng (1999-2004). Current principal is Mrs. Marion Tan Cheng Neo (Nov 2004 to date). St. Margaret's Primary School was relocated to a temporary holding site at Anthony Road Girls' School near Newton Circus between 1984 and 1986 when the premises on Sophia Road was demolished. It returned to the old site with a new address - 99, Wilkie Road, in June 1986. It was declared open by Dr. Dixie Tan, People's Action Party Member of Parliament for Ulu Pandan, on 16 November 1987. Past principals of St. Margaret's Primary School include Mrs. Gertrude Song nee Oh Poh Choo (1960); Mrs. Mary Cassim (Mar 1966-1988); Miss May Chew Siok Nee (Jan 1988-Dec 2003); and Mrs. Elsie Poey-Tan Quee Wah (陈桂华, Dec 2003-Dec 2011). Current principal is Miss Pang Wee Mian (冯慧敏, Dec 2011 to date). Title devised by Library staff.
